Dr. John Fitzgerald McGee was born in Oklahoma and grew up in Dallas, Texas. He began his 33-year career in public service as a Budget Examiner with the Legislative Budget Board where he monitored 13 State agency budgets totaling $676.9M and analyzed legislation to determine the fiscal impact to the state and local municipalities. He was the Assistant Budget Director for the Texas Education Agency when the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Mike Moses, and Associate Commissioner, Dr. Carol Francois asked if he would consider serving as the Chief Financial Officer for a small District that the agency was overseeing back in his hometown of Dallas.
After spending the next 6 weeks in Prayer, McGee made the decision to shift the focus of his career to local schools. He served as the Budget Director for Dallas ISD for 7 years and relocated to Houston where he served in the Spring Branch and Houston ISDs and retired in August of 2022 from the Aldine ISD as the Director of Accounting and Business Services. Continuing in his life’s walk of Public Service, McGee currently performs financial reviews and analysis for 37 multi-family properties totaling $273M for the City of Houston’s Housing and Community Development Department.
He holds a Bachelor’s in Finance and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin and completed his doctorate in Biblical Servant Leadership from Dallas Baptist University in 2015. McGee is a volunteer deputy voter registrar, has been a Board Member of a local YMCA, served as a Mentor for Project Graduation, and remains involved with the Texas Association of School Business Officials as a Registered Texas School Business Administrator.
Papa John and his lovely bride, Phaedra, are blessed and blended to have 5 children and 4 Grandchildren (with one on the way in April) and attend the Crossover Bible Fellowship, where they enjoy teaching in the One Love Marriage Ministry and serving in the Total Fit Ministry as Line Dance Instructor and “DJ” (guess who the DJ is).
